Becoming a Woman of Prayer

My constant prayer is that the Lord would make me a woman of prayer. If there is nothing else I can do to serve others and further the Great Commission, I can certainly be a prayer warrior around my home! I can saturate my home in prayer while I clean the dishes, make a meal, or changing a diaper. I can send forth prayers on behalf of our nation and the souls of the lost while running an errand.

As John Piper says, “A woman on her knees sways more in this nation than a thousand three piece suited Wall Street folks.”

I can be a faithful prayer warrior on behalf of my husband and children as my first and primary mission field. I can bless and do good to my husband (Proverbs 31:12a) by diligently laboring in prayer on his behalf. Satan desires to destroy husband, his character and his leadership in our relationship. Satan desires to steal away the hearts of our children(1 Peter 5:8-9), thus even greater motivation to be on the front lines, alert, equipped with the Word of God, praying His truth over our households.

Perseverance in Motherhood

What a beautiful final chapter was presented to us in The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson. A challenging call to faithfulness and perseverance in our roles as mothers.

“The truth is, parenting is hard. We parents are to be shepherds watching over our children’s lives -guiding, protecting, determining what is best for them. And sometimes it seems that wolves are waiting at each turn in the path to woo our children into their clutches. Diligent parents must confront these wolves again and again, and sometimes we must do battle for our children’s souls. Establishing a godly heritage will come at a great cost.” (page 224)

Rejoicing Despite Circumstances

“Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit on the vines, though the yield of the olive should fail and the fields produce no food, though the flock should be cut off from the fold and there be no cattle in the stalls, YET I will exult in the LORD, I WILL exult in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places.”
- Habakkuk 3:17-19

While attending a recent Ladies gathering, this statement was made on contentment: Circumstances are not what makes us discontent – it results from how we respond to these circumstances. It is all about our attitude! Rather than listening to our fears, we need to renew our minds in the truth (Romans 12:2). Preach the truth to ourselves rather than always listening to ourselves (Psalms 42:5)! As Habbakuk challenges me this morning, even if all my circumstances are failing, yet I will turn my thoughts towards the glorious salvation that Christ Jesus has provided for me. I have much to rejoice in! Habbakuk had to purposefully renew his mind, turn it from dwelling on his circumstances and all the lacks thereof and focus on GOD!

Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice!”

As Matthew Elliot says in his book Feel: The Power of Listening to Your Heart,I believe what God has in mind and what the Bible really says, is that joy is a real emotion. God commands us to feel happy, feel joy, feel good…I think one of the keys to experiencing this [Joy as a real emotion] is keeping focused on God as our source of joy. Our circumstances change from day to day, life sometimes is difficult, events can even be tragic, but when we focus on God himself and His love for us, it brings real joy-regardless of circumstances. We can become so worried about the events of today and tomorrow and focus so closely on circumstances that we miss the smile on God’s face and forget His remarkable salvation and provision.”

Contentment flows from our attitude! This is a main key to living simply…it starts with the heart attitude. Rejoicing in the Lord will bring true and lasting contentment! Let us renew our minds together today!

Challenging Call to True Womanhood

Do you need some encouragement in your role as a woman? Have you lost sight of the importance of your position in the home, church and our nation?

I have been deeply blessed, challenged and encouraged through the content of this past True Woman Conference, held in Chicago in October. Each session has brought solid biblical truth to the forefront and inspired me onward in becoming more solid in my doctrine. As John Piper says in session 1, “Wimpy theology makes wimpy women.”

What is the ultimate meaning of true womanhood?

Again, according to John Piper, “True womanhood is a distinctive calling of God to display the glory of God in ways that would not be displayed if there were no womanhood.

“If you try to reduce your womanhood to physical features or biological functions, and then determine your role in life purely on the basis of competencies, you not only miss the point of womanhood, you diminish the glory of Christ in your own life. Your distinctive female personhood is indispensable in God’s purpose to display the fullness of His glory.”

Beautiful! It’s all about displaying the glory of God in our own unique way! You must listen to these messages! Take advantage of your kitchen time, cooking, cleaning, etc. to listen to a sermon. It will provide you with fresh biblical encouragement that your role is so important and foundational to a strong family and nation!

Mission of Motherhood: Chapter 1

Today we begin discussing our book study on The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson. It is not too late to join in!

What rich encouragement this book has been providing me with in my pursuit of establishing a godly legacy!

I loved this quote from the first chapter:

God designed motherhood to be a deeply meaningful role. We mothers have the opportunity to influence eternity by building a spiritual legacy in the lives of our children. Through our teaching and influence, morality can be learned and modeled, love and kindness are taught and received, purpose and vision are ignited and passed on. The real ability of a mother to secure such a spiritual legacy is based on the strength of her relationship with her child.

That just excites my spirit! What an amazing task lies before me. Motherhood is a means of glorifying God as we seek to give ourselves to our primary mission field. It is a journey like no other!

Here are some thoughts from the application section at the end of the chapter. I love how she draws me again and again to the Word of God and the ultimate truth on this topic.

Psalms 127:1Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”

Sally shares that in the Old Testament, the word house often implied the same concept of the English words family or home. This struck me powerfully. Unless I fully rely upon the Lord to build, strengthen and establish our family, all my efforts will be in vain. I could have a perfectly managed family and yet still be a waste because Christ Jesus is not the center and source of all things. It’s not about me in the first place…it’s not about having the perfect training techniques, books or knowledge on hand. It’s about acknowledging my dependence upon the Lord and taking steps of faith with each investment into their lives…praying every step of the way that He would build my house and my family – for they are His first and foremost!

1 Thess. 2:7 But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children.

The heart attitude of this mother is that she is tenderly loving and caring for the needs of her child. She is not consumed with her own needs, plans, to-do’s, but she first focuses on graciously, compassionately nuturing her children. My prayer is that the Lord would change my hard heart. I don’t want my child to be a burden because my plans are on the throne. I want to have fresh vision to see each denial of self to be a means of nuturing her soul into the Kingdom of heaven. My focus has been more often on ministry to others. when my first primary ministry is to my husband and child.

What stood out to you in this first chapter? Please feel free to share a quote, a prayer, or anything that the Lord has been challenging you with thus far.

Book Study: Mission of Motherhood

I have been diving into The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson lately with great enthusiasm and excitement as my heart is stirred with a greater passion and vision to be a godly and nurturing mother for my little ones. I have such a short coming by getting caught up in my daily schedule and to-do’s and loss sight of the short time given to me to invest in my child’s heart for eternity. I don’t want these precious moments to be wasted because the world around me minimizes the importance of a mother’s role. Little do they know what an important task God has called me to in leading a peaceful nurturing home, where Christ is the center of it all.

“God designed motherhood to be a deeply meaningful role. We mothers have the opportunity to influence eternity by building a spiritual legacy in the lives of our children. Through our teaching and influence, morality can be learned and modeled, love and kindness are taught and received, purpose and vision are ignited and passed on.

” I have come to picture the heart of each child as a treasure chest. Each chest is empty and needs to be filled with the riches of unconditional love, spiritual nurture, and the emotional heritage of family and traditions; with mental stimulation that comes from excellent sources of truth, morality, and inspiration; with a sense of physical and emotional security; and with the guidelines for all of life, including purpose, relationships, and proper behavior.”

Oh, I pray that God would ignite this vision in my heart and equip me with His truth that I might passionately live this out in my home. Do you desire to be equipped for this high and holy calling? Do you care to join me in this read? I felt prompted that this was a good title to use for our second online book study. I will be sharing brief quotes and/or how the Lord is speaking into my life as I read and post these thoughts on a weekly basic (highlighting one chapter a week), and you are welcome to join me in sharing your thoughts as well.

Order your copy today and please let me know if you would like to join me!

We will be starting chapter 1 on September 1st and with twelve chapters, this book should keep us busy till the middle of November.

Thankfulness = Joy

I have witnessed God’s faithfulness in several areas lately of which I am overwhelmed with thankfulness. He is the Great Provider of all our needs! As Kristen so faithfully reminded me, with a quote by Debi Pearl, “Thankfulness is how we think; joy is the abundance it produces.” Joy for the journey to complete all the tasks of life, to manage my home, to serve my husband, to keep my eyes on the Lord, all comes from a thankful heart, a mind that is filling its thoughts with thankfulness.

1. Car Provisions

This past Thursday my husband was preparing to depart for the computers & missions conference. He was to leave at 12:30 am (Friday) for a lovely red-eye flight (hey it was cheap!). We are driving around in our little red Subaru wagon, when we hear the lovely sound of brakes grinding against the pads…well, that is to say that pads are gone…which makes the horrible noise! He’s leaving tonight, what are we to do, it’s our only car, and this is a problem. We call around..no shops have openings. We call a family friend. He is gracious enough to slip us in, due to the emergency situation.

Not only was he so gracious to solve our problem, he also extended himself to solve another ailment that had been lingering for awhile. Our starter has been failing over the last few years, and we have often not been able to start the car (boy do I have some stories!). He replaced our brake pads and our starter and would not let us pay the bill. His generosity was so overwhelming! He told us it was his way of supporting us and the direction God is calling us. God is so good!

2. A new flight

The Lord had already provided the resources to cover the flight and conference, so we knew God wanted him to attend this conference. It is 7:00pm in the evening, the phone rings, Aaron’s flight is canceled. He waits on the phone for over a hour trying to talk with someone. Finally, we decide the best thing to do is just go to the airport. We lay Karis down to bed at my brother’s house, and drive to the airport together. I drop the husband off at the gate, and proceed to park the vehicle. Low and behold, before I even entered the airport, Aaron has managed to get a new flight and to top it off it was a better flight to boot! He departed at 10:30 instead of 12:30 and arrived earlier as well. Praise the Lord! He definitely wanted Aaron to go.

3. My hubby is coming home!

Last but not least…I am so thankful that my hubby is coming home tonight! Absence makes the heart grow fonder indeed, but there is only so much I can handle. Actually, it has been a refreshing weekend for Karis and I. We spent a lot of time with my family, which was a joy! I am so thankful for Skype (a free online telephone system), through which I was able to talk with Aaron via video throughout the past 5 days. What a huge blessing! Being apart makes we realize to a greater extend what a wonderful gift my husband is to me. How undeserving I am of his love for me! He so faithfully seeks to provide for us, protect, and lead us in the Word.

What are you thankful for today? Increase your joy today by reflecting on what God has done for you!

The True Woman: Chapter 10 – Submission

Thank you to Marliss Bombardier once again for providing us with the recap of the final chapter of our book study of The True Woman by Susan Hunt.

Submission, as Susan Hunt says, is “the defining virtue of the defining virtues” of the true woman. I would say that it is the defining virtue of any woman, whether a true woman who seeks to develop the virtues of piety, purity, domesticity, and submission, or a new woman who is primarily interested in making sure her rights and desires are respected and fulfilled.

What is Submission?

“Submission, whether it is to God, to one another, to husbands, or to male leadership in the Church, is a grace-empowered virtue of humility and reverence for God. It has nothing to do with superior/inferior status or equality. It has to do with attitude and function. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are equal in being and in power, but each has a different function.” pg. 206

Biblical submission is not subjection, nor passive subservience, but neither is it an evangelical feminist ideal of muddled gender roles that ejects men from their unique leadership roles in marriage and the church. It cannot be put in a neat, legalistic little box of specific behaviors or lifestyles. It can and will be different depending on the situation and relationship involved. It boils down to a matter of attitude-joyful and willing submission to the God-ordained authorities in one’s life; and of character-piety and humility.

Simplifying by Communing

Late rising, long to-do lists, multiple demands upon our time…how easy is it for us to simply jump into the day without meeting the Lord? How often does this then result in a very trying day, filled with multiple stumblings into sin in reaction to husband, child or other, trying to do it all on my own ability, because I neglected to lay my day before the Lord…but is it really worth it? A moments rest at the foot of the cross leads to renewed strengthen and resting upon the Savior. What a delightful day it is when first centered around the Lord! Simplifies my life when I reflect upon and lay before Him the events of the day, seeking His face as to what is most important!

As John Blanchard points out: “Surely we only have to be realistic and honest with ourselves to know how regularly we need to turn to the Bible. How often do we face problems, temptations and pressure? EVERY DAY! Then how often do we need instruction, guidance and greater encouragement? EVERY DAY! To catch all these felt needs up into an even greater issue, how often do we need to see God’s face, hear his voice, feel his touch, know his power? The answer to all of these questions is the same: EVERY DAY!”

As Carolyn Mahaney says: “Meeting with God each day is a way of acknowledging that we are totally dependent upon his grace.”

Simple living all starts with making our relationship with the Lord our first priority for the day!

Did you get some time in the Word today?

Holiness: A Heart God Purifies

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions.” (Romans 6:12)

It all started out with a little thought of frustration at a friend, alongside a little bash at my pride in another situation, multiplying till my thoughts were filled with anger. Arriving home this anger was vented upon the poor hubby and baby, for no good reason except for the fact they made the volcano errupt…ever been there?
