Envibum: A Creative Cloth Diaper Solution

This month I have been excited to review Envibum’s line of cloth diapers. Envibum is one of our February sponsors and they graciously sent me a diaper to review. This is a Christian family run business that strives to provide high quality cloth diapers for families at a reasonable cost. They are passionate about being good stewards of our environment. They sell one size diapers and prefold style with covers. Upon arrival of their one size diaper, I was immediately struck by how cute this diaper is! It is made from soft plush Minkee fabric with an inside fabric of 100% unbleached cotton with unique channels in the fabric to help with absorbency. It is incredibly soft, and a very unique design. No snaps or any other system to adjust the size. It fits the average baby from 8-40 lbs. You also don’t have to worry about stuffing or unstuffing this diaper. With the velcro attachments inside the pocket, the absorbency pad stays in place, and it is fully customizable if you need extra absorbency to last you through the night, making it an adjustable all-in-one diaper. It washes clean without removing the pad from the diaper. The velcro on these diapers is amazingly strong and reliable. This diaper is definitely more bulky than your average diaper, due to the thickness of the minkee and cotton, and they do take longer to dry, but I have not had any problems with leaking or rashes (as long as you wash before use!). Given I haven’t used it for long, I cannot say how long the elastic in this diaper will hold out, but considering the excellent high standards of this company, I confidently believe they stand behind their product. Coming from a small family run business, I was blown away by the high quality design and construction. I especially love how they donate $2 from each diaper they sell to various charity organizations through their giving back program.

They also offer prefold style diapers and covers (called mom4mom covers) that are excellent as well. I did feel that a snap-eez would be useful for keeping the T-shaped liner in place, especially with a squirmy baby like my little guy, but definitely a lot less bulky then a full prefold. With each of their mom4mom covers purchased, they give a cover to a mother and baby in need. I love supporting businesses like this who are not about the profit but about investing in others lives. That is to be commended!

I have tried numerous diapers to date, and this diaper, along with my durable BumGenius pocket diapers, is a new favorite in our collection.

Stay tuned for a special giveaway later this month!

A diaper sprayer would be nice but by the time baby is born we will be using the “loveable loo”, so no toilet water access. Do you know of a sprayer that connects to the tub or shower head? Our sink faucet is not an option for the sprayer. I hate to leave “mustard poo” setting in the diaper till I can wash it.

I use BumGenius AIO and Pocket, and agree that the pocket are better for drying, but if I dry the AOI’s inside out, it takes the same amount of time. I am not a big fan of the velcro though, it curls out pretty bad and pokes through my son’s clothes, have you had this problem? because of this I bought some FuzzyBunz pocket diapers and have been MUCH happier with them, but snapping them with a squirmy baby is tough, they are SUPER soft though and it’s easier to insert the liner… Do you have any experience with making cloth diapers? I think I may want to go that route next time around…

p.s. sorry to be so late on replying here, I just got turned onto this blog today, but cloth diapers has been on my mind the past few days, so I’m happy to chime in =]

You mentioned that the envibum is more bulky than others. I have never tried cloth diapers, and am thinking of switching. Bulkiness is one of my concerns, but I have no idea how one compares to another. Is there a huge difference in the bulk with the envibum diapers? Are the mom4mom diapers bulky as well?

And, now with summer approaching, in your opinion, do you think the envibum minky would get too hot for infants? Or is it pretty breathable? And the same for the mom4mom?

    • Lindsay Apr 03, 2010 at 7:28 am #

I should clarify that the envibum when stuffed is more bulky, but not any more than other all in one style diapers. You really only need to stuff at night unless you have a real heavy wetter. The envibum are incredibly easy to use though, so I believe that outways any bulkiness. And you know, the babies could care less. Cloth in general will be more bulky than disposables but it doesn’t seem to bother the babe or prevent them from crawling, etc. Summer time is perfect for diapers and baby legs or just onzies. Babies don’t get overhot in my experience.

I’m in the process of changing my daughter over to cloth diapers and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions on good natural disposable diapers until I get enough cloth to switch exclusively.

Thanks so much, Lindsay. I am using those right now and really like them! Thanks for the amazon info as well!

Are you still liking the envibum diaper? How long have you been using them? Is it easy to use, compared to other cloth diapers? I am contemplating switching to cloth diapers with our 3rd, and was wondering how you still like these in particular. Do you have the envibum or the mom4mom one?

    • Lindsay Mar 05, 2010 at 1:32 pm #

I have been using it for over a month now and it is great. I still probably prefer pocket diaper myself over all-in-one styles because they dry faster, but if you want something that is VERY easy to use when beginning cloth diapers these are definitely an excellent option. I can highly recommend them! I have both styles. Not a big fan of prefold style diapers, so I don’t use it often. It more of a backup.

Thanks for the review. I’ve been reading your blog for several months now, and I love it! I’ve been comparing One size cloth diapers all day. Originally, I was looking into Gro Baby, BumGenius, SoftBums, and Envibums. After watching the video clips on Envibums site, I just like them better and better. I’ve been using disposables for my daughter, but I am just finishing up some waterproof/flannel training pants for her. I’m 33 weeks pg with #2, and was originally planning on making my own diapers, but I am getting bored after making a dozen training pants, and I don’t have time to make all those diapers anyway. I love the idea of one size all the way through – it makes them so economical and easy. I just don’t know where to start. I think I would be fine with the T-shaped liners and Mom4mom covers, but wonder if it would be nice to have some of the AIOs around, too. Is 12 of the liners w/ a couple covers and 6 AIOs a good place to start?

    • Lindsay Feb 25, 2010 at 9:49 am #

Yes, 18-24 dipes is a good amount. I prefer more like 24 dipes myself then I don’t have to wash so frequently, but you can definitely get by with 18.

Has anyone tried the mom 4 mom covers . . . they look and sound good. They do look like the elastic leg openings have the PUL directly on the baby’s skin as I can’t see any soft fabric ribbing (I’m not crazy about the PUL on skin). Anyone tried them or know an answer to this question? Thanks.

    • Lindsay Feb 23, 2010 at 2:10 pm #

Yes, I have tried them and they are entirely PUL. There is no fabric lining, but the T-shaped liner is large enough that I didn’t experience any problems hurting the baby’s skin. It’s a nice cover!

I have been using Envibum since the very first diaper (I am close friends with the owners). I cannot say enough about the company and the family behind it. They are truly an amazing family and really strive to make their customers happy.
I love my Envibums. The new Minkee diaper is FABULOUS. We actually don’t even have to use the absorbancy pad because the diaper is so well made. The other day I had my 20 lb baby girl in it and she wore it for 4 hours (through a nap) without any leaking, wicking…nothing! And this was WITHOUT the absorbancy pad. She sleeps 14 hours at night, and this is honestly the only diaper that would last all night.

I am so excited about my envibum diapers! I am expecting #5 in Aug, this one to be born in Uganda where we are moving as missionaries. I contacted the company about their diapers, and they offered to sponsor our family by providing us with diapers for our new one! This company is run by the sweetest ladies! I am excited to be able to try out their diapers and pass on the word about their great company. Although I haven’t tried them yet, I know they will be great because of the high standards of the ladies who make them. I encourage all of you to check out their products. It is so wonderful to see a company with such a Kingdom mindset. They have already been such a blessing to our family, and we look forward to partnering with them to diaper babies in Uganda :)

  10. Meg Feb 17, 2010 at 3:29 pm #

I am expecting baby #3 in June and have looked into these, as well as the BumGenius (even tried and liked them with #2). However, I just found another brand called Smartipants. Has anyone heard about their quality or tried them? I’m driving myself crazy trying to make the most informed choices in order to get hubby fully on board the CD train!! Thanks!

  11. Chaya Feb 16, 2010 at 6:28 pm #

I remember when my children were in diapers and we bought those big cloth diapers that you folded. They were tremedous but to get some absorption, they needed to be folded multiple times. I am happy there are so many solutions now.

I have to ask my daughter-in-law if she wants these. I am glad, I stopped by.

  12. Rachel Watters Feb 16, 2010 at 5:10 pm #

I think these diapers are so adorable! I love the green with the brown leaf. We use bumGenius for our baby girl and are really satisfied with them… I wouldn’t mind throwing a couple of these into our supply though- just for their cuteness! I also really like the purpose behind the company. I’d love to be able to do all my shopping with companies who serve people, especially with the Kingdom of God in mind!

  13. krissi Feb 16, 2010 at 2:56 pm #

I just bought a stash of gDiapers. I am interested in your further reviews, as I will need to buy more diapers once she grows out of the current size. Keep us posted! Did you find they are more bulky than other cloth diapers? I’ve had some problems fitting onsies over bulky cloth diapers in the past and an infant in a diaper that will last her til she’s 40lbs, sound like there would be a lot of extra material. Also, are these only sold online?

  14. Rachel Feb 16, 2010 at 2:10 pm #

These are so cute and they look so fluffy. I am buying gently used prefolds and covers for my little one because of the cost, but if I had more to spend, I would definitely consider these!

  15. Krista Feb 16, 2010 at 11:49 am #

Thanks for posting this! I bought the AIO and the cover last night to try out. We are in the middle of our “trial pack” from Jillian’s Drawers and there are some great diapers in that set (Bum Genius, Fuzzi Bunz and Thirstie’s covers w/ prefolds all work great!), but I was really wanting to use 100% cotton where it touches my baby’s skin. I can get that with the prefold, but I do like the ease of the AIO. I like that the cost of just about any diaper system we choose is about the same so we can choose our favorite and not what is the most frugal (since all options are frugal!). If we like envibum as much as I think we will, we will definitely be buying more to use them exclusively!

  16. Jen S. Feb 16, 2010 at 10:55 am #

This sounds like everything I would have asked for in a diaper! I think I’m going to sell my BG’s and order some of these to try.

  17. Rachelle Feb 16, 2010 at 7:17 am #

Thanks so much for this review. What timing! I spent a couple hours yesterday looking into diffrent diapers and had not come across this one. I just went to the site from your link and my goodness they look neat. I’ll be trying them out when I start buying diapers. (we are due with baby #5 sept.3) God Bless

  18. Cassie Feb 16, 2010 at 7:09 am #

These are the diapers I am buying for sure! I love them. My baby is due in April. And I am so excited to have found a great diaper I feel good about.
If you go to the website you can watch there great very informative video’s!

  19. Susie Wankerl Feb 16, 2010 at 6:32 am #

Lindsey, thanks for this review! I had not heard of these before now. You mentioned they are a bit more bulky than the average diaper. Are diaper covers also needed with these, or is this the whole thing?
    Thanks!

    • Lindsay Feb 16, 2010 at 8:41 am #

No, it is an all in one diaper, so no cover is needed.

  20. Hannah Feb 15, 2010 at 8:22 pm #

Thank you for this post. We are loyal bum Genius fans (and have a few other brands we like too) but I like trying new diapers. I especially like the idea of supporting a family. Bum Genius is huge now and is made, I believe, in Egypt.

A few of my son’s diapers are getting worn and will soon need to be replaced. I’ll consider trying these out! I wonder if they’d fit my 3 year old daughter as well for night use? With the end of nap-taking, she has started sleeping so soundly that she wets at night.

    • Lindsay Feb 16, 2010 at 8:55 am #

BG diapers are made in the USA actually, unless they have changed in the last year. I tried the Envibum diaper on my almost 3 year old and she is 30 lbs. She is rather petite, but it seems to work just fine on her.

  21. Leah Mick Feb 15, 2010 at 7:37 pm #

Thank you so much for this review, Lindsay! My sister (Rachel) and her family, as well as my self, are so grateful for your review and that you love the diapers! We also just started a blog! at http://www.envibaby.com! Thank you ever so much!

  22. Christie Feb 15, 2010 at 5:29 pm #

How absorbent is it? Do you think it could be used as an overnight diaper?

    • Lindsay Feb 15, 2010 at 8:16 pm #

Totally! It is definitely very absorbent and with if you double up on the insert pads, you should be fine.

  23. Emily Feb 15, 2010 at 3:32 pm #

How should you wash the diaper before using? How do you wash your diapers, what detergent?

    • Lindsay Feb 15, 2010 at 8:17 pm #

I just meant it is always recommended to wash any cloth diaper before use to help kick it into gear. The same was true with these dipes. I use Charlies Soap on my cloth diapers.

      • ~M Feb 18, 2010 at 4:33 am #

For some reason, I thought you were using Soapnuts on all your laundry, including diapers. Is Charlie’s Soap superior for diapers? What do you use on the rest of your laundry…why something different than for the dipes? Thanks!

        • Lindsay Feb 18, 2010 at 9:05 am #

Yes, I was using soapnuts on everything up till a month or so ago. I need to update my soapnuts post because after several months of washing dipes in soapnuts the dipes started to repel significantly. Soapnuts just don’t seem to have the effectiveness necessary for cloth dipes. So we use soapnuts for laundry since it is so much cheaper and more natural and charlies for dipes.

Wish they had made this kind of thing when my girls were young and in diapers!

  25. Karen Feb 15, 2010 at 12:21 pm #

These look so soft & cozy! I didn’t coth diaper my first, but am interested in trying it with my 2nd due this summer. Weird question. I’m not sure I can get over the yuck, rinsing fator. (disposables are so easy in the regard. just wrap & toss!) What do you recomend? How do you rinse your diapers & prepare them for the washer? How does this work when your away from home? How many do you need to start out with? Thanks so much!

    • Lindsay Feb 15, 2010 at 12:44 pm #

Karen, I have written on all these topics before. Check out the Baby Care category for further discussions. You probably will just want to get a diaper sprayer. This is especially recommended for folks that don’t like the rinsing factor. It is a tool that attaches to your toilet making clean up a cinch.

    • Leah Mick Feb 15, 2010 at 7:35 pm #

Hi Karen, I work for envibum (my sister is Rachel the owner). I just wanted to let you know that there is video under the enviclips tab called ‘Let’s talk poo’. It was my issue before starting to cloth diaper too. I actually don’t rinse. Look for an unbleached cotton cloth diaper because they are much less likely to stain. I just shake any solids into the toilet and the rest rinses out in the wash and is sanitized with hot water. You can add 1/4 cup vinegar too sometimes if you really want to know they are sanitized. It kills bacteria and makes diapers fluffy though I have no idea if you use it a lot if it would be bad for diapers or not. I need to look into that

  26. Sarah Feb 15, 2010 at 12:15 pm #

Thanks for doing this post! I’ve been reading all your other posts on the subject, and I was really wondering what you thought about envibum. I’m definitely going to give them a try.

  27. Catherine @ A Spirited Mind Feb 15, 2010 at 9:57 am #

That’s such a great idea to have it grow with the baby, but I can’t figure out how it stretches to fit the bigger child? I have other one size diapers but found that they were confusing for people who weren’t used to them. Thanks for sharing about this company!

    • Lindsay Feb 15, 2010 at 11:42 am #

It honestly just stretches. The front portion has extra elastic to give it a tight fit but easy to stretch.
