We had a fun time hosting a neighborhood BBQ at our home on Sunday evening. We served these delicious shish kabobs and I just had to pass on the recipe to you all. They include marinated chicken chunks wrapped in bacon and barbaqued on the grill. You can skip the marinade if desired. We recommend a naturally fermented soy sauce (learn more here) and add more vegetables (cherry tomatoes, green & red peppers, yellow onions). They were awesome! Try the recipe here. We use apple smoked nitrate free bacon from Trader Joes’s, which is fabulous! We also picked up the fresh vegetables (green peppers, onions, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes at our local farmer’s market. This was a fun company meal!

We’ve been trying to figure this out … what exactly is Bragg’s Liquid Aminos? It says it’s made from soy protein; right? And yet a lot of people use it in place of soy. What is it, actually?
That is actually something I have been doing a little more research on lately. I understood it originally to be a GMO-free version of soy and thus preferred to your standard soy sauce, but the more I research it I am seeing that it still has MSG in it. Alas! I am not sure what to do myself! I love this flavoring in my asian style dishes.
It has MSG in it? Really? I thought the only listed ingredient was soy protein (I don’t remember exactly). Hmmm … Maybe I should look at the label again….
Apparently, it is the processing that causes glutamic acid to form. They formally had No-MSG on the bottle but were forced to remove it because it was not true. Sally Fallon said the reports showed that it did contain MSG. Read more here. Very disappointing to me. I wrote her an email and she recommended that you want to purchase soy sauce that has been fermented (and Bragg’s proudly claims it is not fermented). Fermented soy sauce is the safest to consume.
Lindsay, do you happen to know where one could find fermented soy sauce? I was hoping Azure Standard would carry it, but I’m not finding it there.
I supplied a list of fermented soy sauce here.
I loved these when I came over. so good!!
We also wrap scallops and shrimp in bacon… Yum! Definitely a once in while treat. If you don’t want to get out the grill you can also do them under the broiler.
I was looking at this with my husband just now. I had gotten as far as the picture when he looked at it and said, “Yes. That looks fantastic.” So…it looks like we’ll be trying this one soon!
We LOVE this recipe! I found this on allrecipes last summer and it became an instant hit although I don’t make it too often, my hubby is always super happy when I do. And I’m always happy when I can find a chicken dish my hubby likes….he is truly a (red)meat and potatoes kinda guy.
That looks so delicious. Shish Kababs… brushetta… your backyard BBQ party looks a LOT different than one down here in SE Texas!!
(I’d love to come to YOURS!)
Thanks for the recipe. With still 2 more months to go of hot weather, I’m sure we’ll keep the grill going.
Yummy! Bacon makes any bbq better!
I’m glad you posted this recipe. My husband LOVES bacon. I grew up in a household that did not consume pork so bacon has never really been that appealing to me. However, I’m willing to make it for my husband as a treat every once in a while. If you haven’t tried beef bacon, I highly recommend. We found it at Market of Choice. I am not sure if they have a Market of Choice in Washington, but you may be able to find it at any other gourmet grocery store that carries local ingredients. My husband prefers the beef bacon over the pork bacon! It is a lot leaner and the butcher said it has a bit more protein that pork bacon.
We eat turkey bacon here. We aren’t pork eaters either.
