I have been blessed to discover while checking out my recent Mountain Rose Herbs catalog that they have actually lowered the cost of coconut oil! It is now $37 per gallon compared to the previous $41. That is the first item I have seen decrease rather than increase in our current economy, and every little bit helps. You know I love it for its wonderful uses!

hI AGAIN lINDSAY, I WANTED TO ASK YOU WHICH COCONUT OIL DO YOU BUY FOR ALL YOUR USES? I SEE (MRH) SELLS IT AS “UNREFINED” OR “REFINED”…I WANT TO BUT THE CORRECT ONE, PLEASE HELP!!!!
THANKS
I buy the unrefined as it preserves more of the nutrients for my cooking. The refined version is perfectly fine for body usage though.
Can you explain the difference between expeller- and cold-pressed, which is better, and why? Thanks!
Check out my posts on oils here.
There is a company called Country Life(www.clnf.org) that sells 50lb non-organic coconut oil for $57.50 and organic extra virgin coconut oil is 8 lbs for $42.00. If you could organize a co-op or just have a really large order of $400 or more they will deliver it free to certain areas. You’d need to look it up to see if they come your way.
Hurray! I just placed an order for the 5 gal extra virgin coconut oil (thru your link
, using the Chinook coupon for 50% off. So including shipping, it averages out to only $23 per gallon. Amazing! Thank you for your help with finding the best nutrition for the best value.
Do you know if the new book that came out in June has the coupon?
I was gravely dissapointed to discover that they are not running a new coupon in the 2010 chinook book. Alas! You can still save alot by purchasing a 5 gallon bucket. That puts it at around $33 per gallon. I will be doing this myself!
Thank you Lindsay. I have been checking. It seems they have the best quality for the price.(even without the coupon)We will be ordering it from Mountain Rose Herbs.
Cheeseslave recommended Tropical Traditions, which from Amazon is $31/gal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000W775T0?ie=UTF8&tag=cheeseslave-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000W775T0
Do you know anything about their products?
I have heard good things about Tropical Traditions, but they run at around $70 per gallon for cold-pressed organic coconut oil. MRH sells the cold-pressed organic for far cheaper. The link you submitted is their expeller-pressed non-organic version. I understand cold-pressed retains far more of the nutrients. MRH recommends expeller pressed oil for body usage. IT can be used for eating as well, but is not as nutritious as cold-pressed. That is how I understand it.
I *heart* coconut oil.
I get my coconut oil from Glorybeefoods.com Their regular price for a gallon of extra virgin organic coconut oil is $32. It is on sale right now for only $25. Not sure how long it will be at that price. I really love this company though they have tons of good stuff.
Wow! What’s the shipping like if you combine it with other things? Shipping up to Alaska here is $26, bringing the total to about $63. On Vitacost.com (one of my favorite resources for soap, shampoo & conditioner, raw honey, coconut oil, etc., etc.), they have 54 ounces of organic coconut oil for $19.99! (Ends up being $47/gallon.) And, they have a flat rate shipping of $4.99 for any size order. (It’s $9.99 for me up here in AK.) I normally get my order within about 5 days.
I’ll have to make sure to order some with my Chinook book coupon here soon! That would make the 5 gallon bucket just under $75, which is such a great deal.
Where are you ordering from and how are you getting a coupon of 50% off? I would love to know!
Full details about the coupon and source (Mountain Rose Herbs) can be found here.
That’s great news indeed, as mine is running low and I need to make another purchase of it. I got mine at a local healthfood store, hopefully their price will come down, too.
I am about to place my first order with MRH, and I just can’t wait to get a whole gallon of coconut oil for $37! I’ve been loving the 24oz jar of Nutivia – it’s gone already, now I’m scraping the last bits out every night as a facial moisturizer
