What I loved about this chapter was the reminder that we have a clear calling as mothers, and parents, to train our children in righteousness. Our calling is not to make sure they are exposed to enough of the "arts", learn to read by age 4, or even have SAT scores that allow them entrance to prestigious colleges.

This is a Truth that God has been speaking into my heart...the "world" says accomplishments matter, God says the heart is what matters. The world says this is a stage and just hold on til it passes. God says this is an issue of sin and it needs to be conquered by Truth, and replaced with wisdom.

While I don't think homeschooling is necessarily God's calling for everyone it has been a blessing for us in that I have TIME to deal with the character of our children as issues arise. I also get to spend the rest of the time laying a foundation of godly character as we emphasize godly character traits in our day. Diligence, respect, perseverence, patience. I find that the kids aren't the only ones who have time and oppurtunity to work on their character...the areas I fall short become crystal clear to me as well and I am thankful for the chance to ask God to help me.

Really the truth of the matter is that we should be spending the bulk of our time instructing in righteousness. There is a chance in almost every conversation to instill godly values. Let us not believe the lie that our presence makes little difference; that without us they'd be the same. I heard a pastor say recently, "My children would be different people if my wife were not at home with them all day." That is Truth. That is a gift. Let us not refuse to accept that gift.

I loved this quote and this concept when she presented it at our homeschooling conference. When you look at her children, you can see it works! They are amazingly accomplished for their ages, so noone can say that focusing on the heart issues first hindered the course of their future! I think it's easy to get focused on wanting the best for our children, forgetting that the education is great but a relationship with God truly is the "prime directive"!

I personally am really being encouraged in my "job" of mothering and educating from Sally's books and enjoying your posts.

Thanks for the reminder. That is one that I need every day as a homeschooling mother. The focus should be on character and a heart for God rather than getting it "done". I am so guilty of the "going"...have to work on that one. :)
