Homemade Tomato Soup (from scratch!)

Yum! This was the first time I have explored with making my own homemade tomato soup and it was delightful! I had a pile of tomatoes from the last pick of my garden and what better way to use them but to prepare a luscious tomato soup for our family!

Come on in and I will share with you my creation…

4 cups tomatoes, diced or pureed in the blender (approximately 8 small tomatoes) – I used part of my canned tomatoes and it worked great!
1 onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced or a combination of cloves and garlic powder
1 cup chicken broth
1 tsp sea salt or garlic salt
1 Tbsp dry basil (or fresh if you have it!)
dash of pepper
2-3 tsp rapadura or other natural sweetener

Saute onion and garlic in a little coconut oil till tender and translucent. Add tomatoes and chicken broth and cook over medium heat for approximately 15 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before transferring carefully to a blender. Puree until smooth. Return to pot and add the remaining ingredients to your taste. Delightful with a dalop of sour cream on the top!

It’s supper easy and delicious…I can’t imagine going back to the store bought varieties now!

Soups are a fall favorite! Here are a few others to try: Spicy Lentil Soup, Chili & Garden Chowder – all of which can be made without meat and thus very frugal, whole and nutritious!

I made it last night with about 2 lbs of fresh/frozen tomatoes that I froze from this year’s bounty. First I put them in boiling water to remove the skins, then cut ‘em up chunky. Bottom line… absolutely delicious! I tweaked the recipe by adding some dry dill weed, dry chili flakes, and finally, I cooked in some half & half cream. I used “Just like Sugar” for the sweetener. THANKS!

Last year I made my first tomato sauce now this year I have 7 tomato plants with a lot of tomatos I believe will ripe at the same time so Im trying this soup this year got my idea after watching Masterchef haha

I have to try this! I just got a bunch of VERY ripe tomatoes and soup is the only way my husband likes them. I can answer the baking soda thing. Baking soda is a base and tomatoes are acid. When you mix the two they cancel each other out. Good sicence project for the kids is to see what happens to milk in water with baking soda, lemon juce and a mix of baking soda and lemon juce in water.

Becki the former lab tech now a very, very happy wife and mother!

Thanks. I also had several left over tomatos from my garden. This is a great basic tomato soup recipe. You can add almost anything to it to make it your own. I added a few bacon bits and diced a few tomatos to give it texture, and called it a BLT soup (the celery and onions substitute for the lettuce). It was delicious. Thanks again!!

Great recipe! I love that unlike the canned version, it does NOT contain harmful high fructose corn syrup. Thank you for posting!

How many does your recipe serve? I want to make just enough for two, maybe a bit more.

    • Lindsay Nov 23, 2010 at 12:52 pm #

Usually 6-8 servings. it freezes well!

  9. Joan Oct 14, 2010 at 9:24 pm #

I made this soup from your recipe today, using half fresh tomatoes and half frozen. Instead of the cup of water I just added 2 chicken boulion cubes to the tomatoes as they were cooking. I thought the frozen tomatoes would make it too watery. For a little sweetness I used two packets of Stevia, being a diabetic. It turned out absolutely delicious and this was my first time for homemade tomato soup ever!
Thankyou for sharing, you have a very attractive website.

I have a ton of tomatoes I need to use up for something – wondering if you peel and seed the tomatoes? I’m guessing yes, by the looks of your picture. Thanks!

    • Lindsay Sep 14, 2010 at 1:57 pm #

Not at all. I just puree in the blender.

  11. Meggan Jul 03, 2010 at 2:43 pm #

This was great! I added a carrot, celery stalk, 5 potatoes and a tablespoon of left over pesto to season. Served with grilled cheese on homemade bread:)

    Lindsay,

Thanks for the recipe! I am getting ready to make it, and the soup sounds delicious. I have a question however, is it true about what the lady is saying on the first post on this page? The part about adding baking soda to the tomatoes? I am going to make this for a long time to come and I would like to know if this is true? I am not a chef just a college student who loves to cook at home. Thank you for your time in advance,
    Shane Meyer

    • Lindsay Feb 15, 2010 at 12:44 pm #

I couldn’t figure out what you were referring to. Can you clarify?

      • Megan Mar 25, 2010 at 2:45 pm #

This is what Shane is talking about.

”It is delicious with a swirl of cream added at the end as well (though you are supposed to add some baking soda in with the tomatoes so that it won’t curdle the cream).”

-I just ate some and it was delicious. I added some red pepper flakes, because I’ve used that with tomato soup in the past. Yummy, healthy, and fast…love it!

Thanks so much for sharing your recipe. I’ve been looking for a yummy made-from-scratch tomato soup and this is one I will definitely try today. I love you photo with you and your children at top. Very beautiful!

  15. Sabrina Sep 28, 2009 at 3:21 pm #

Thanks for the recipe! I used 1/2c soy milk & 1/2c water instead of the 1c chicken broth, because I am a vegan. I loved it!

  16. Lisa Sep 09, 2009 at 3:42 am #

I am going to try this today! Thanks for the recipe. Do you mind if I share this recipe on my blog (with a link back to yours of course)?

    • Lindsay Sep 09, 2009 at 12:27 pm #

Go for it! Just include the link back to my blog is all I request.

  17. Kari Apr 04, 2009 at 1:37 pm #

Great recipe! I’ve made it twice this week! I add a little soy milk to each bowl (because I can’t have dairy while I’m breastfeeding since the little one is allergic). Delicious!

  18. Emily Mar 16, 2009 at 7:35 am #

I made this last week, and it was fantastic! I used one large can of crushed tomatoes and added some half & half at the end. Served with grilled cheese, it is a perfect lunch for my husband and I (and I don’t normally like tomato soup)! Thanks for the recipe!

  19. Norma Mar 03, 2009 at 11:16 am #

    Hi Lindsay,
Im pretty new at making homemade stuff but Iam really enjoying myself. What can I use instead of rapadura for the tomatoe soup? I don’t even know what that is.
    Have a great day,
    Norma

    • Lindsay Mar 03, 2009 at 1:27 pm #

You can use any sweetener as desired. I try to stick with natural sweeteners at our house. Rapadura is a natural whole cane sugar. You can learn more about it here.

I am another who always disliked canned tomato soup, but I think you all have just inspired me to make tomato soup for the first time since childhood, with cream, crusty no-knead bread and a fall salad. Perfect for a simple Sunday meal after church since it can all be made on Saturday. :) I will have to use some of our summer-canned tomatoes, but it will be worth it. Thanks!

Yummy! I made homemade tomato soup for the first time not long ago also. I used a little milk in mine, you could use cream too. I didn’t put any sweetner in mine, but I bet that makes it taste really good. I may have to add some next time (I froze a bunch).

  22. Michele @ Frugal Granola Oct 21, 2008 at 1:27 pm #

We love homemade tomato soup, too! :) When I was in college, a friend used to bring bags of tomatoes from her family’s farm, so that I could make soups & tomato sauces for friends in the dorm.

We love adding a dollop of yogurt, instead of sour cream. Thanks for this yummy-sounding recipe!

    Blessings,
    Michele

Yum! Like DeAnna, growing up I hated tomato soup (which always came from a can) but since I got older, I found that I love homemade tomato soup! I make something very similar, but add a bit of cream at the end to make a tomato basil bisque. It is a fast and easy favorite!

If you have leftover or dried-out bread, also try a Pappa al Pomodoro . . . it’s a great way to use up bread (frugal!) and makes a nice thick soup.

    Best,
    Sarah

I made tomato soup for the first time last week also. Mine had cream in it. But it was so good. I am going to be posting my tom. for WFMW. I enjoyed reading how you made it. Thanks.

Ohh thanks for sharing the recipe. Homemade tomato soup. Mmm, I have never tried but I think I might after seeing the picture.

    Thanks

That looks delicious. I wish we had an abundance of tomatoes here. I tried by planting eleven tomato plants in pots around my apartment, but alas, not to be. We got ONE, and it’s just now starting to turn red!

When I lived in Moscow, we were often forced to make things from scratch. We used our paperback Better Homes and Gardens to make lots of things (using many substitutions). Tomato soup was one of those. We didn’t even have a blender or food processor, but the tomatoes cooked down so well, that we almost couldn’t tell. That definitely was the best tomato soup I’ve ever had. The next time God blesses me with more than a handful of good tomatoes, I will definitely have to try this recipe.

I love tomato soup! This sounds so good. I will have to try it out with the dozens of frozen tomatoes I have!

  28. DeAnna Oct 21, 2008 at 8:18 am #

Yummy!!! I was never a fan of tomato soup — the canned kind, but I LOVE homemade tomato soup. At a little cafe here in town, they make this delicious homemade tomato dill soup, I really need to try to make it at home. Yours looks delicious!
