Input Request: Humidifier

Okay, I am in need of a good humidifier for colds, sickness and the like. We have been borrowing from friends and family in the past, but with the current ongoing cold my little one has, I am looking to break down and purchase our own. I just don’t know which one to buy! So many positive and negative reviews on all the ones I was checking out on amazon.

Do you have any recommendations to share? Is cool or warm mist better? It would be nice if it didn’t need filter replacements, but then again I do want some thing that will last many seasons. Thanks for sharing in advance!

Hello! We have a Reli-On Brand humidifier and it has been great for our family. No problems, but you do have to change the filter, and I usually just stock up on a few to have on hand. Also, Cool Mist definitely! Our pediatrician and everything I have read says that cool mist is the best one. Just my 2 cents! Good luck!

This is what we use, http://www.amazon.com/Crane-Adorable-Gallon-Humidifier-Penguin/dp/B000GWJD0A/ref=pd_sim_k_title_1. We have 2 of them and have not had any problems with them. It is a cool mist, which we prefer. There were some negative comments with this one, but none that we have had and we have used them for 2 years.

We have two cool mist humidifiers. One is like mentioned in the previous comment–it’s a Crane, except ours is a cow. And then we also have a Vick’s humidifier, which you can add some Vick’s vapor to if you want (which we haven’t tried.) Both seem to be great. And neither were very expensive. We use the Vick’s to keep our house humidity up in the winter, and we use the Crane one to help with Bella’s colds and allergies. I can’t remember exactly, but I heard somewhere about the advantages of cool mist over warm mist–it had something to do with bacteria or mold growth in the water. You might look into it.

Cool mist and warm mist are really for different purposes, but it’s easy enough to get a warm mist going by steaming. So if you’re going to go with one or the other, I’d go with the cool mist.

I also recommend the Crane humidifier, as the above commenter linked. (Except we have the frog one, not the penguin.) It has been wonderful so far (for the past 18 months)! Sometimes I do put a drop or two of essential oil (lavender or eucalyptus) in the water, which is probably not recommended, but hasn’t caused any problems yet.
I think Target sells this brand of humidifier as well.
    Blessings,
    Michele
