Lotion, Aftershave – Natural Alternatives

There is one product that meets all of these needs without doing a thing, except rubbing it on! Can you guess what it is? This product is fabulous for you health both on the outside and the inside. It feels wonderful, without being too greasy or messy. It is all natural! When purchased in bulk and used for other things (listed below), it can be quite reasonable!

What is it?

Coconut Oil!

Lotion/Moisturizer - a little dab will do you! Scoop out and rub on your skin. Sweet fragrance as well. I have replaced all my miscellaneous lotions with this one product!

Aftershave – I told my husband he just had to try it as an aftershave, and low and behold it worked. I love using it as well after shaving those sensitive areas. Calms and refreshes.

For Married Women -It also works well for that special hubby and wife time.

Other uses I have had success with:Deodorant

Cooking uses:

stir-frying
replacing oil/butter/shortening in baked goods
melting and adding to smoothies
greasing pans with it
any other ideas?

I am a huge fan of coconut oil (if you haven’t noticed already)! The more products I can cover with just this simple natural alternative, the more I save and the more I rejoice! I just found a recipe for toothpaste that uses it as well. Can’t wait to try it and share the results (if successful)! The way I am going, pretty soon this will be the only product in the bathroom! ;)

I purchased my first bottle of CO today. I have been rubbing my whole family with it today. :) However, it doesn’t have a sweet scent. This is “Pure Coconut Oil”. Should I purchase an extra virgin type? Or should I just try another brand? Any suggestions?

    • Lindsay Sep 26, 2011 at 5:51 am #

If you are just using it on your skin, it doesn’t really matter what brand or variety it is. But if you want to eat it, you will want to use an unrefined version.

      • Christi West Sep 26, 2011 at 1:49 pm #

I am really wanting the sweet scent. Mine doesn’t have a scent at all. Is there a particular brand that has the sweet scent of coconut?

I read that coconut oil is antibacterial, given that fact…what do you think of using it for acne? Maybe a long shot, but I’m pregnant now and can’t use the stuff I used to use to get rid of acne….and nothing else works….and I’m more broken out now than I’ve ever been! I was thinking of using it to wash my face (a friend of mine said she used to use olive oil as a facial cleanser).

Where can you buy good quality coconut oil in bulk? My local health food store has it, but its expensive! Thanks :)

Im Fijian, so I love coconut oil, but i wouldn’t recommend eating or cooking with it, its very fatty, stick to olive oil for cooking as it is thinner, and its been proven that the thicker the product, the more the bonds are saturated, aka saturated fats, and unsaturated fats like olive oil will clear arteries and is better for you, and another thing, you can test this theory, as low density lipo proteins are bad for you, they will sink in water, and high density lipo protiens (the good stuff) will float in water. BTW, I’m a medical student and just worried prolonged use of coconut oil for cooking can lead to lots of (cardiovascular) heart problems, so please be cautious.
kk sorry to rant and run, but I got to go.

P.s My family use hot oil treatments with coconut oil, as its so fatty its good for skin and hair, heat in microwave, till its warm, (not hot) just warm, massage in to hair, leave over night either rapped in scarf over your hair, for your pillow, or leave it unwrapped, if you have a spare pillow case on it, then wash it out in the morning with shampoo, it will leave it soft, shiny and nourished.

ICE CREAM!!! Single best ingredient ever for easy home made ice cream = coconut oil.
Aaannd if you infuse your oil with some herb*, it’s even better for relaxing, therapeutic massage. -and toast.
Coconut’s not the highest temperature oil, I recommend frying with safflower, sunflower, and/or grapeseed oil instead.

I find it amazing people believe coconut oil is high in cholesterol. It s high in saturated fat, but doesn’t contain any cholesterol at all. Cholesterol is only present in animals.

I love the stuff for after shave, cooking and mosturising.

    i love coconut oil.
i use it for deodorant and toothpaste and i will never go back. i am experimenting with a shower wash with it, so hopefully something exciting will happen.

I love your website! So much great info. I am also a huge fan of coconut oil but haven’t started using it as a body product so I’m really excited to try it in this manner. Question: I looked on Mountain Rose Herbs website and they sell refined CO for body products and unrefined CO for cooking, do you use both or one types of CO and which one? Thanks!

Coconut oil is also great for oiling up wooden spoons, wooden knife handles, etc. in the kitchen. It brings out a nice deep color and as always, smeels great. It's good, too, for helping to increase a breastfeeding mother's milk supply. I think of coconut oil as being like hemp; so versitile!
Thank you for the deodorant recipe. I've been using coconut oil for all sorts of things for years, but haven't made this and now is the time! My husband is very irritated under his arms from something in his not natural deodorant (because natural deodorant doens't help with smell).

I am with you Lindsay…I LOVE Coconut oil! I use it for everything. My homemade bread, lotion, special hubby time, eating it straight for a brain booster, replacing it for butter, in my homemade soap and more. I just made the deoderent so I will see how I like that. I am sure that I will! :) I just made a healing lotion that is wonderful! I had scaly, dry elbows and this healing lotion “cured” it. I love being a homemaker and making everything that I can from scratch. It is very satisfying!!! Thank you for your blog!
    Blessings!
    Joanna

Update! I have been using this deoderant and absolutely love it! I never smell and it has not irritated my skin at all. I make it just the way you suggested. I am now being asked by friends and family to make it for them too. My DH is even using with amazing results!

    • Zion Mar 27, 2011 at 6:14 pm #

Will you share the lotion recipe? :)

  11. Avi Feb 22, 2010 at 7:21 am #

I’ve made the deoderant with the coconut oil, with one addition I think you’ll like.. well, actually, two… I put a few drops of organic lemon essential oil, and tea tree oil; it smells great, and works fantastic.. as for the “other” use you suggest for coconut oil, (wink, wink, nod, nod, say no more! ;) my wife and I have found that simple vegetable glycerin with a small amount of water added works wonderfully.. it’s 100% natural, water soluble, doesn’t taste too bad, and actually warms to the touch with friction.
    Enjoy :)

    • Zion Mar 27, 2011 at 6:16 pm #

Along with the deodorant is a bit of RAW honey…it has anti-bacterial elements and it produces a sweet smell when you perspire.

  12. brigitte Nov 04, 2009 at 5:14 pm #

I also use coconut oil as a make-up remover/cleanser. Just rub on and wipe off with a towel. It is the only thing I’ve found that is gentle enough for my face, yet cleans. It will take anything off, even that horrible waterproof mascara.

  13. Kristi Jul 29, 2009 at 3:06 pm #

    I love your site!!!
My 5 year old son has had baby achne since he was born. In the last 2 years I have been putting CO on it most days and it clears it up. I also use it as our lotion, and recently made the deoderant. I love it.
I wanted to comment on the comment above about the mom and her child with eczema. My 3 1/2 year old daughter suffers from eczema all over her body to the point of scratching it bloody. I haven’t been able to help her until I got her on raw cows milk. I was affraid to have any of us drink it, but within 2 days her eczema cleared up and her skin is smooth and itch free. We went off of it for 3 weeks because of cost and her eczema came back full force and so we just bite the bullet and buy it. It’s her “medicine”. The CO sooths her itchy skin but doesn’t make it go away.

    • Sarah Jan 11, 2012 at 9:50 pm #

      Hi Kristi,
There is beneficial bacteria in the raw milk (that’s the only difference between raw milk and pasteurized milk). Try probiotic supplements; there are studies about the connection between bacteria and skin. I like PB8 because it has a minimum of ingredients (I have horrible reactions to dyes), but you can experiment and see what works for her.

  14. Renae Jul 08, 2009 at 8:10 am #

I am loving CO! I just started using it… made deoderant and while I still sweat it doesn’t STINK :) I’ve been using CO on my body and my face. I just put it on my hair after my shower this morning. My hair is course and sort-of curly, sort-of wavy, but mostly frizzy usually, but the CO has made it softer, shinier, and just a very faint hint of sweetness. I’ve been using it when I make bread products and even spread a bit on my pita this morning. Even hubby tried it with peanut butter on his pita. I’ll gently try to persuade him to put it on his flakey bald scalp ;) Thanks soooo much for all your amazing information, tips, and advice. I love your site!

  15. Jennie May 16, 2009 at 7:52 am #

Love your website. I use coconut oil as daily lotion and recently switched to coconut milk on my face at night, less mess for the pillow cases. It is amazing too, got to try it.
    Loving my home,
    Jennie

I was searching for homemade shampoo recipes and came across your site. I have been cruising around on it now for about an hour and am loving it! This will definitely be bookmarked on my computer!
As for toothpaste/soap, I wonder if you have tried adding melaleuca/tea tree oil to your toothpaste recipe? It is a natural antifungal, antibiotic, etc. (As you are a lover of coconut oil, I am a lover of tea tree oil.) Also, it leaves such a clean feel to your whole mouth. I am going to try your recipe for toothsoap and add a few drops of my tea tree oil and see what happens!

  17. Beulah Jul 08, 2008 at 3:53 pm #

Wouldn’t using it as an aftershave leave an oily residue causing breakouts? I’d like to have my hubby try this but I’m worried it won’t be good for his skin…

How did the toothpaste work out for you? I’m trying it myself and am 50/50 on it.

    • Lindsay Jul 08, 2008 at 5:29 pm #

Unlike popular belief, coconut oil actually helps prevent breakouts or acne and the like. It helps heal and nourish the skin. My husband has used it without any problems.

I tried the toothpaste recipe and didn’t like the texture or taste. I have been working on creating my own recipe, still using coconut oil, and so far it is working great for us. It is an actual toothpaste consistency, which is much preferred in my house.

      • najeeh Oct 02, 2008 at 11:07 am #

hi, did you use the coconut oil as a toothpaste?

  18. Hilarious Hide Apr 13, 2008 at 6:50 pm #

I like the “Married’s Only!” line. I feel kinda left out :P

  19. Jill Apr 12, 2008 at 9:00 am #

Wow, it is a bummer my husband is allergic to coconuts.

  20. rachel chitra Apr 12, 2008 at 6:32 am #

    Lindsay,
Another word of advise. Please don’t take an oil bath in winter. The reason why many people take oil-bath in India, is because its good for the skin and it lowers one’s body temperature. So while here in India, I might feel quite refreshed after an oil-bath, it maybe different for u in the North-West. But u can go for an oil-bath during ur ‘lovely time.’ Helps me a lot then
    :-)

  21. rachel chitra Apr 12, 2008 at 6:28 am #

    Hi,
This is Rachel again. In Nagercoil, the southern most tip of India, where my people come from, we extensively use coconut oil for cooking. While it is much tastier than sunflower oil or gingelly oil, its quite high in cholestrol. So when I cook, I use coconut oil only for popping popcorn, salads, etc not for deep-fried items. Its like a potential heartattack served on a platter. I’d also advise u too rub ur whole body with coconut oil and massage it before u have bath once a week (Its a custom thats been followed for hundreds of years in India). A therapy in itself. An oil-bath is a must on all festival days like Diwali, etc.

    • Lindsay Apr 12, 2008 at 9:40 am #

Rachel, response to your comment will have to take a separate post, as there is a lot of confusion over the benefits of oils and fats, which I would like to address more fully. Thanks for your input though!

  22. Alissa Apr 12, 2008 at 4:38 am #

Hmmm… you may have finally convinced me to give this a try. One of the few things I am not making myself yet is our personal care products – we are usuing natural, but store-bought ones, and quite frankly, they are really expensive!! I’ve been a little nervous about making my own because I’m so picky about that stuff. But I may just buy some coconut oil and give it a try. I’ll check my local health food store and see if they have it.

    Thanks. :)

  23. Rebekah Apr 11, 2008 at 8:52 pm #

Does it cost a lot to have it shipped??

    • Lindsay Apr 12, 2008 at 5:24 am #

It costs around $8 for shipping, which works out to be about $38 for the cold pressed version, or $29 for expeller pressed. Wilderness Family Naturals sells their cold-pressed brand for $34 for 1/2 gal. Quite a change!

    • Jenita Oct 02, 2011 at 3:13 am #

I actually found this more eetnratining than James Joyce.

  24. Claudea Apr 11, 2008 at 12:30 pm #

    Lindsay,

What kind of CO do you order from Mountain Rose Herbs?

    • Lindsay Apr 11, 2008 at 1:15 pm #

I use the unrefined/cold pressed coconut oil. It is better for cooking and eating, and since I use it more for that anyway (using only small quantities for body products as above), I choose that over the refined/expeller pressed version that they sell, although the second option is cheaper. ($21 compared to $30). They explain it well on their site.

  25. julie Apr 11, 2008 at 8:55 am #

It is sooooo versatile! I use for many things, but I’ll have my husband give it a try! He usually stays away from aftershave.

  26. Tia Apr 11, 2008 at 8:48 am #

Don’t know if you can use it as a shampoo there Lindsay, so you may have to keep that on hand.

I like CO as a lotion too I use it on my foot, after a pedicure…but I have my favorite lotions for everyday use. I have a chocolate and vanilla one…so yummy smelling!

  27. Stephanie @ Keeper of the Home Apr 11, 2008 at 7:57 am #

I also enjoy using it as a lotion- it works so nicely on my hands, which have eczema. I also used it on my son’s eczema and it seems quite soothing and helpful.

I’m intrigued by one of your other uses- I’ll let you guess which one! :)

    • Amanda Feb 19, 2010 at 8:03 pm #

I’ve never purchased Coconut Oil, but I think I might now! My 6 month old has eczema & nothing seems to help! I’ll have to give this a try!
