Costco Organic Finds

If you have a Costco in your area, here are a collection of organic items our local store carries. Does vary according to location. I found with Costco still sometimes they have it, sometimes they don’t.

Organic Baby Food (Earth’s Best)- 24 jars of organic baby food for $13.99…that’s $0.58 per jar! Now that’s a good deal, and a good brand! The box came with 3 different kinds, 8 of each. Varieties were: vegetable and turkey, banana, pear & oatmeal combo, and the last was sweet potatoes, I believe.

Ecos Laundry Detergent - approx $13.69 for 105 loads -wonderful natural detergent! Concentrated so you don’t use very much. Lasts us 3 months while washing around 5 loads per week.
Organic Butter – $6.89 for 2 lb – another good deal – I stretch its use!
Organic Peanut Butter – 2/28 oz for $7.45
Organic Cold-Pressed Olive Oil – 2/1 litter $17.49
Maple Syrup – they often sell an organic version (around $20 for 64 oz)
Organic Pacific Tomato Soup – 6/32 oz. $9.99
Organic Chicken Broth – 6/32 oz. $9.49
Amy’s Organic Soups – 8/14.3 oz. $11.79

I was so excited to find these tomato products, as their prices were much cheaper than my other source, Azure Standard:

S & W Organic Tomato Paste – 12/6 oz. $4.99
S & W Organic Tomato Sauce
– 12/15 oz. $5.95
S & W Organic Diced Tomatoes – 8/14.5 oz. $6.69

Uncured Bacon- 3/12 oz. $10.75
Organic Ground Beef
- 3 lbs $11.99
Organic Whole Chickens for $1.99 per pound!

Organic Raisins – 48 oz $5.69
Organic Salsa (30 oz) & Bean Dip (16 oz) -come together – $5.89
Lundburg Organic Short Grain Brown Rice – 12 lbs $11.49
Organic Whole Wheat Bread – 2/26 oz loaves $4.95
Organic 14 Grain Bread – 2/26 oz loaves $4.79
Organic Sparkling Lemonade - 6/25 oz. $9.29
Annie’s Organic Macaroni & Cheese – 15/60 oz. $9.99
Treetop Organic Applesauce Cups - 36/4 oz. $9.99
Alden’s Organic Ice Cream - 2/48 oz. $7.85

They also carry organic pop tarts…but that’s where I say the “organic” label doesn’t necessarily mean healthy! I am sorry…organic sugar is still sugar!

Unfortunately costco near me stopped carrying the following items ( I used to buy regularly)

    Organic Pacific Tomato Soup
Lundburg Organic Short Grain Brown Rice

I could not find these online too. Are other stores carrying those ?

Sam, I would encourage you to write to Costco and let them know that you are disappointed about them no longer carrying these items. Sometimes they can tell you if the reason was because the manufacturer, production, or not enough people purchased the items.

Costco does do a good job of caring about customer feedback (just look at their monthly newsletter) who knows maybe you can make a change.

Great Website and I have tried so many of your recipes like lip balm and deo I always wanted to write about stores which sold organic and your post on costco’s organic products is really good.

Have you found any whole foods deals at Trader Joes?

  4. April Feb 24, 2011 at 7:09 pm #

Wow!!! What a deal! No more Whole Foods for me. I wonder if the butcher at Costco will cut up the chicken if asked.

    What a bummer! We don’t have a Costco where I live. Only Sam’s. :(

Much obliged for the post and for creating a attractive website. I have been searching for reliable info on natural health and will put this information to use. I have found it hard to find reliable ideas, as there are so many web sites with useless information. Certainly keep it flowing!

Thank you so much for this listing! We also have a Sam’s membership but rarely use it since switching to more traditional, organic foods. I’m going to go check out my local Costco today and see how it looks!

(BTW: if you have a Sam’s membership, you can get a full refund on it anytime. That’s what I am going to if we switch to Costco!)

Also, sadly, Costco no longer carries Maranatha almond butter :( The new brand that they carry is not pure almond butter; it contains ingredients including egg whites and wheat germ. Maranatha was the best! If anyone has a recommendation for the next cheapest place to buy quality roasted almond butter (smooth), I’m all years and would be very grateful!

    Hi Lindsay and readers,

Costco now carries organic quinoa in 4 lb bags ($9.99 near Chicago, though in Ohio it was $7.99). They also carry Kerrygold salted butter for $7.49 for 24 oz and organic raspberries.

Costco also sells natural (not organic) Marantha almond butter in huge glass jars.

Is olive oil something that should be bought organic?

Lindsay, I know you probably don’t buy the Ecos anymore since you’ve transitioned to soap nuts, but I’m curious why you chose Ecos over the environmental Kirkland (Costco) brand?

Also, what price do you pay for raw honey (from anywhere, just the best price…I’m trying to see if this deal I saw at the Farmer’s Market is good)? It seems so few farmers sell in glass, but I finally found one who does!

    • Lindsay Aug 01, 2009 at 10:13 pm #

Ecos was the only eco-friendly brand Costco sold at the time. I pay $23 per gallon for raw honey.

      • ~M Aug 01, 2009 at 10:27 pm #

Where do you find such a good deal on raw honey? Does it come in glass? The best I found was $12/4 lbs (that works out to ~$33/gallon according to a website which cited the density of honey as 11.3 lbs/gal). Thanks!

I just came across your blog, it’s great! =) And wondering which state your Costco is in, lucky you for KerryGold at your Costco! Wish mine carried it, I just sent them a recommendation for it too =)

We are in Washington. Unfortunately, they no longer have KerryGold butter. It comes and goes with Costco’s…that is one reason I don’t shop there very frequently. I can never guarantee getting this same product next time. ;) Alas!

        • ~M Sep 03, 2009 at 8:07 am #

I just wanted to note that usually the Kerrygold is not with the rest of the butters, but by the fancy cheeses. Definitely ask a few employees before you give up. That’s how I found a box 2 months ago near Chicago.

In the PNW Canned Food Grocery Outlets (and other liquidators) have a pretty good variety of organic products and are very reasonable. Also many don’t realize you can shop at Cash & Carry without a membership – they just don’t take non-business checks. I really like them because they are no-frills, low advertising, and almost everything there is very reasonable. I did a price comparison once between C&C, Freddies, Safeway and Select Markets, and C&C was hands-down the cheapest. They have some organics like tomato soup, soy milk, and spring mix. They are getting more health-oriented products like Bob’s Red Mill, Adams peanut butter, sea salt, etc. Some things you can buy just a little, others are only by a huge jar or case.

They also sell frozen Organic String Green Beans — very yummy :)

    • Suzanne Aug 06, 2010 at 12:15 pm #

I used to buy the Organic String Beans all the time and loved the taste. I stopped buying them, and the organic broccoli after I read on the package “Product of China.” The vegetables were grown in China and shipped to Canada for distribution. Not very ecologically friendly.

We have a Costco in our area, but I’ve never joined because I didn’t know if I would still be saving money with the coop fee added on. Do you know what the fee is and if you’d still be saving despite that expense?

    Thanks!

    • Erin Payne Apr 28, 2009 at 3:43 pm #

We paid $50 for a year membership. They have all kinds of different plans and that was was the least expensive. I think if you shop there enough it’s definately worth it.

Thank you, ladies! :) I am going to go visit Costco sometime next week- looks like we will switch our membership. :)

We have a full organic price list for Costco (in the midwest anyway). Check it out! http://becentsable.blogspot.com/2008/04/costco-organic-price-list.html

Does Costco sell organic eggs? Our Sam’s membership is almost up & now you have me thinking I should switch to Costco- we have moved to eating more organic and now do not get much at Sam’s. I do like the price for organic eggs- just over $6 for 2 dozen!

I’ve been reading your blog for sometime- really enjoy it!

Heather, I am not sure on that one. I’d have to check. Sorry.

      • Erin Wilson May 08, 2009 at 8:24 pm #

Yes they do…18 ct for under $5!

        • ~M Aug 01, 2009 at 8:45 pm #

In Chicago, it’s $3.99 for 18 organic large eggs! My guess is that it would be even cheaper further from a big city.

          • Lindsay Aug 01, 2009 at 10:14 pm #

Beware that organic does not mean very much. They only get organic feed but most likely are conventional raised in tiny cages without free range access or very limited access.

    • Kristen May 19, 2008 at 11:55 am #

Our Costco in the Chicago area sells 18 Organic Eggs for $3.99. It used to be $3.69 but that was several months back.
