Kitchen Tip: Using Mason Jars for Blending

blender-jar-1.jpg Ever wished you had a grinder for those small jobs? I came across this wonderful idea of grinding seeds, nuts, coffee beans, whole spices, etc. with the simple use of a mason jar on your blender!

You simply screw the blade onto the top of the jar, and put it on your blender. The benefit…you don’t waste any scraps stuck in the blender, and it is already ready for storage in its own container. I tried it with some sunflower seeds on my Oster blender and a narrow mouth jar, and it worked beautifully. It also worked well when mashing up some quick food for Karis. blender-jar-2.jpgI have also been interested in getting more whole spices to preserve the freshness. This would be a wonderful spice grinder alternative on the cheap!

Did you know that many, if not most, blenders can be used with a standard mason jar, or a wide-mouthed mason jar? This is a trick my mother taught me. Apparently 40 years ago or so, about the time this blender pictured was bought, manufacturers used to include a mason jar in the box with the blender. Mom blender-jar-3.jpgrecalls even a booklet that listed the many things one could make with the mason jar blender, including ground spices, whipped cream, and peanut butter. We use this trick most often to make whipped cream. The blender whips it right in the jar, so if we have extra, it’s already in a jar for storage. And it is easier when it comes to making small quantities.

LOVE this tip and can’t wait to try it! I have been wanting a small volume blender for smoothies and smaller recipes, but didn’t want to spend the extra money. So glad to know now that I don’t have to!

I love the idea. I too have the Magic Bullet and a coffee grinder. I have mason jars and I would like to see if it will fit on the Vita Mix blener. If I didn’t have all these other gadgets, this would be the perfect solution to a grinding, mixing problem. Thanks.

Wow! What a cool tip. :D I actually wanted to do something like this today. I needed to grind up some flax seeds. I ended up using the coffee grinder, but this is wonderful idea! I’m going to try it!

What a great tip! I love it! I especially like the fact that there’s little to no waste since it’s already in the jar. That’s just awesome. :)

Thanks so much for sharing this tip with us!

WOW! I didn’t realize that you could use a jar! I guess I thought that it would explode or something with it not being “made” to go with the blender in the first place.

Great tip! Going to have to try it! :)

    Thanks for sharing!

What a great tip! You would think blender companies would promote this feature more with their product. This is really handy!
