My lovely little girl has been teething terribly this past week, or so it seems. Upper two teeth just won’t come in…and they are so there! Any good suggestions to make this process easier? Looking for more natural remedies, if at all possible.
Thanks!
So far we have tried….Teething Tablets and Tylenol, which I would prefer not to use, except on extreme occasions, like last night (took 2 hours to get her to bed).
Love to hear your thoughts!

We always use Hylands Homeopathic teething tablets or jell (I prefer the jell when they are young, but know some mothers who prefer the tablets) It worked really well for my children, and I also highly recommend their colic tablets. I wish that we had discovered them earlier. My son has been a very good baby but he started struggling with crying all night at about 3-4 months for about 4 nights in a row once. I was desperate and asked my hubby to pick some of these up … I had never heard of a remedy for colic symptoms, anyways, within minutes of taking them my son started letting out gas and stopped crying so I think colic is really gas problems. http://www.hylands.com/ I hope this works for you!
I just heard about this one… freeze a waffle, and when they want something to gnaw on, take one out and wrap it in the paper towel. nutritious and will help w/the gums.
I know your daughter is way past teething. My daughter is currently teething (8 months old as of yesterday) and so I was checking out this post. I have these ice trays that are made to make ice cubes for water bottles. They end up being about 4-5 inches long and just skinny enough to fit through the top of a water bottle. Like “M.I.A. in Minnesota”, I put on of these in a washcloth and put a rubberband around the bottom and let her chew on it. Seems to be helping and she find it interesting (she hasn’t had any solids yet and not much water) so it keeps her occupied as well. It melts and gets her wet but it’s hot where I am now anyway. Just thought I’d share and maybe you could try it with your son
P.S. I’m a new reader to your blog and have been very encouraged! Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
CHAMOMILLA 6X by Hyland’s homeopathic medicine, is for teething and irritability and seems to work wonders for my baby girl. I haven’t needed to use Tylenol yet. She also broke out in a mean diaper rash and Natrum Phos. 30x by Hyland’s worked to take the edge off of that, I’m also gonna try making baby wipes to see how that works.
Side note…I’d be interested in hearing how your mom does things as far as how she helped develop all your siblings interests and strengths, practically, I love the spiritual aspect too, but practically speaking, day to day, whatever comes to her brain stuff, ya know.
Thank you for doing this website, I’m telling all my hard core Christian/ health nut friends about it, it’s very helpful, encouraging and confirming. thanks! keep it up!
Isn’t teething a treat?! I feel so bad for the little ones. They just don’t understand what’s going on! Just remember this too shall pass…until the next tooth!
I have three girls and they all loved frozen baby peas when they were teething. Simple, cheap, nutritious and entertaining. I also put one large icecube in a flour sack towel, secured it with a thick rubberband under the icecube and gave the icecube a good whack or two with the flat side of a meat tenderizer until crushed. They would chew and suck on that thing until their little mouths were numb and happy! Of course, since mommy really needs a good nights sleep, I would give them tylenol before bed and they slept like, well…babies! It looks like you received some great hints. I hope you find one that works for your little girl!
PLEASE TRY THIS REMEDY! I am confident you will be SO glad you did (little one will be too). My midwife reccommends rubbing fresh cold pineapple on the gums – the pineapple numbs things up AND breaks down tissues, exactly what is wanted here. Also, a piece of frozen fresh pineapple to gnaw on falls apart easily in the mouth as it melts and has the same numbing and tenderizing properties. This has worked Perfectly for each of my three children. And although we don’t currently have any teethers, we always have spears of pineapple in the freezer in place of popsicles – (they can be made ito chocolate coated popsicles too:) I am continuously thankful my children were introduced to these at a young age and still love them today!
The only other teething remedy we resort to is Hylands teething tablets (homeopathic) and I can’t tell that they really work other than providing a distraction.
Hope this helps all teething families out there!
Karis is probably past teething but for baby number two, clove oil will completely numb the gums. I tried it on myself first. You mix a few drops in about 1T of olive oil. I hope this helps!
Oh my!! I forgot about this. A month ago, I was having problems with a remaining wisdom tooth. A co-worker suggested this, and oh my this WORKS! Of course she told me straight lol. I did have to buy it online tho.
This can also help w/teeth aching. I originally was told I needed a root canal. and the thought terrified me! I never had problems w/my teeth besides wisdom tooth problems.
A month later, and still no other pain.
Lindsay I used a partially frozen wash cloth, Hylands tablets and Motrin. Luckily my kids were easy but late getting their teeth. They suffered from bad diaper rashes while teething which were worse for them. Here are some other ideas: clove oil diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed on her gums. Also pure vanilla extract rubbed on the gums. Obviously this contains alcohol in it so use caution, but anbesol contains benzocaine among other things. Follow this link for more in depth directions:

I agree with Stephanie on this one. Motrin works way better on Isabella than Tylenol. My daughter is 10 months and is working on her 8th tooth right now. She has been miserable with each tooth. Whenever she cuts a tooth, I usually can’t leave the house for several days because of the non-stop crying. The Hyland’s tablets are wonderful for us. They usually make her go to sleep, too. I haven’t tried a gum number like anbesol. I heard somewhere that it actually hardens the gums, making teething harder. I don’t know if that is really true or not. It’s just something for you to research, I guess. I think, in the end, the best remedy we’ve found is to pray for Isabella and ask God to give her rest and comfort. And He’s always been so faithful.
Does she have any teeth yet? Because a cold carrot to gnaw on really helps my little guy (but if she has teeth, you have to watch her like a hawk, because it’s amazing how they can get chunks of carrot off, even with one or two little teeth!).
We also do the cold washcloth to chew on, as well as the Hyland’s tablets and Motrin. I specify Motrin because both we and some good friends have found it to be more effective and long lasting than Tylenol. We don’t prefer to use drugs either, but every once in a while, you get a little desperate!
Also, with the last couple of teeth that Caden worked through, I started rubbing his gums more and it was incredibly calming for him. He would just open up and let me do it for almost as long as I wanted to. I think it may have also helped them to break through faster. Definitely worth a try!
And my last suggestion is a good baby carrier- do you have one? I bought my Ergo when Abbie was 1 and getting her molars and eye teeth. It was the only way to get us through the day, as she just wanted to be held constantly, but if she was on my back, she was so much happier.
Hope those pearly white come through soon!
I had this several months ago with my little guy. His gums were even bleeding from those teeth!
I too had to resort to tylenol. We gave him some frozen Popsicles to suck on to try to numb the area. It helped somewhat…I also had Grandma come and rock him for awhile to give me a little break!! Hope they are through soon!
Another thing to freeze is banana’s in their skins. They are great to chew on.
Hope those teeth come through soon.
I read in a herbal remedy book AFTER my kids were past the teething stage that Hylands COLIC tablets actually work better for teething than their teething tablets. My kids never had much trouble w/ teething (& in general, until they weaned (at age 3) nursing was the cure for ANYTHING that was bothering them, so I just counted on doing nothing but nursing when they were teething)I *will* say that more recently I’ve not had much less w/ combination homeopathics, but have had good success with single remedies, if we have another child (who doesn’t accept nursing as the cure for all that ails them), I’d probably research which single remedy homeopathics were most likely to help w/ whatever specific teething symptoms my child had & use those.
We liked the washcloth idea, that worked well for us, as did popping the all plastic flexible baby spoons in the freezer as it was something a little harder to much on.
But what also works, and is cheap, is to buy a box of those popsicles that come in the plastic sealed tube/bags (we called them Mr. Freezies), and give frozen ones still in the plastic to be munched on. Especially with the first teeth it works well as they cannot bite through the plastic, and even with teeth it is hard! Once it is thawed just throw it back in the freezer to be reused.
My little guy is working on his top teeth too… I like the teething tablets too. He loves his mesh feeder with frozen grapes, melon, apple etc. Hope they come in soon and you both can get some relief!
To be completely honest – when it was bad, the only thing that seemed to give the boys any relief was baby anbesol. For some reason neither would take any kind of teether, washcloth, cold or not. This seemed to relieve them until the tooth finally popped. I did used to have to give them Tylenol, mainly ’cause they always presented with colds and fevers while teething. It didn’t seem to actually help with their gums, but it did help with the other symptoms, making them more comfortable.
I second the Baby Ambesol.
Be careful w/Tylenol. Use the measuring cup that it came w/. And never a household spoon. Seems like common sense. And don’t give her more than the recommend dosage. Even per day.
Baby rings, wash rags, teething rings etc. Will be great. Has she ever taken a pacifier?
Those mesh feeders will be great now too!! I used to put crushed ice in those. Little messy, but not too much water melted. KWIM?
OH!! And celery sticks great too, for my girls to gnaw on. Of course, I only gave them to them in my supervision. And gave them a new one when the ends started to split. Or just cut off that end.
Hi, Lindsay! Have you tried putting a wet wash cloth in the freezer for a few minutes to let it get real cold, then let Karis bite down on it for a while? I always used those teething tablets and Tylenol as well. Sorry I don’t have a better answer!
