My Christmas Present: A Juicer!

Aaron surprised me with a Juicer for Christmas! To the left is a picture of my Hamilton Beach juicer. He ignored the rule that it had to fit in the stocking, but then again, he is the head of our household, so I will eagerly submit to his decision to get me this item. He said that he wants me to keep up the good work in providing nutritious food for our family. I was so blessed by his support and providing me with tools to serve this purpose! I have made two different juice combinations since Christmas, and this machine has worked well. The first was a combination of beets, apples and carrots, and the second was tomatoes, red peppers and apples. Yummy! My hubby is requesting more. It is so easy to use as well. Simply wash and cut the ingredients (some items fit in without any cutting!) and slowly push them down in the juicer!

Why Juice?

Superior Nutrition – One glass of fresh juice provides you with the equivelant benefits of eating several pounds of fruits and vegetables. Definitely successful in fulfilling the daily recommendation of 3 vegetables and 5 fruits each day.

Quick Energy Lift – The nutrients contained in a glass of juice are absorbed within minutes, requiring almost no digestion.

Diet Control – Low calorie, fresh vegetables and fruits go great with diets where you need to maintain vitamins and minerals intake while lowering calorie intakes.

Disease Resistance – Juicing, particularly during cold and flu season boosts the immune system. Too bad I didn’t have this sooner! ;)

Here are few interesting points from the article The Benefits of Juicing: Fresh juices are a tremendous source of enzymes. In fact, the “freshness” of juice is one of their key features, because enzymes are destroyed by heat. When you eat cooked foods, whether its meal, grains, fruits, or vegetables, if the food is cooked at temperatures above 114 degrees, the enzymes have been destroyed by the heat. Since fruits and vegetables are juiced raw, the enzymes are still viable when you drink the juice. Plus, since juicing removes the indigestible fiber, these nutrients are available to the body in much larger quantities than if the piece of fruit or vegetable was eaten whole. For example, because many of the nutrients are trapped in the fiber, when you eat a raw carrot, you are only able to assimilate about 1% of the available beta carotene. When a carrot is juiced, removing the fiber, nearly 100% of the beta carotene can be assimilated.

Here is another article with more information on the benefits of juicing.

I am definitely enjoying it!

I love my vitamix for green smoothies. I want all the fiber.

Do you buy juice? What is a good alternative without having to buy a juicer to make your own juice of the basic fruits? Maybe something for just citrus fruits? Thank you for your advice with this!

I’m not sure if I follow your question. I buy orange juice concentrate to add to smoothies, but that is really the only juice I buy from the store. Otherwise, you could easily juice in a blender. You would just have to strain it afterwards if you didn’t like the pulp.

Do you still use this juicer? I am looking into buying a used hamilton beach juicer, and I’m curious if you still like yours…

    Thanks!

No, I personally don’t use a juicer anymore but rather use the whole fruits in our smoothies. It worked great while I used it though!

Is this juicer easy to clean? I know that’s a big problem with a lot of them.
My midwife has told me that if I want to tantum nurse through my pregnancy she wants me to drink fresh juice daily. So, I need something easy to clean.

A really good, really nutritious combination is kale and green apples.

I have a Breville juicer. One of our favorite recipes is honeydew melon and cucumber. We also love sweet potatoe juice. I have to watch my sugar intake, so I only drink a small amount of the fruit juice. My children love watermelon juice. However, too much of that and they will need the restroom!

That’s so great! We love to juice too (we have a Champion, and a Jack Lalanne, I believe). Have fun with your new toy! One of our favorite treat juices is 4 green apples (tart), 1 lime or lemon (we usually cut off some of the peel, but leave some on as well), and a bunch of fresh mint. Add to glasses of seltzer or club soda. :)

I would love to have one of these. It would help me get my husband to eat more fruits and vegetables too! :) And homemade juice from fresh fruit looks so much better than the store-bought sugar-filled juice.

Thank you for posting about this :) My husband wants to get a bunch of fresh fruits and veggies to juice this paycheck…we love it, but don’t use our juicer very often :) I need to start making more of an effort.
