When to start solid foods and what?

I need advice…Karis is 6 1/2 months old and it seems about right to start her on solids. She has been wanting to eat more frequently, waking up early, not being satisfied with my breastmilk (or my supply is not sufficient for her). I have already been supplementing a little with formula for her last feeding if I am not able to pump in the morning. I thought at first it was a growth spirt, but this has been going on for three weeks now.

When did you start on solids and what food items did you start with first?

    Hi Lindsay,

I have only just recently found your blog, but I have quickly learned to love it! My husband and I strive to live as natural a lifestyle as is possible on our budget. It is certainly refreshing to find fellow Christians that share the same convictions about food! Getting to the point, I know that this is old, and I am quite sure that this crisis has passed by now. However, I wanted to share for future reference. I have a book on making your own baby food that starts at 6 months and moves through all of the developmental phases as far as food is concerned. It is invaluable to me because it is very important for my children to eat well from the very beginning. Either way, it’s called “Superfoods for Babies and Children” by Annabel Karmel. You should look it up on Amazon, I believe they have copies starting at around $5. Thanks for the inspiration!

For future reference. If you nurse on demand, you will have enough breastmilk. And be sure to drink plenty of water. And make sure you are taking in enough calories. Since you are sustaining another being’s life.

    Hi Lindsay,
i was browsing the Nourishing Traditions/ WAP website and found an article which goes into a lot of detail about when/how to make baby food. Thought I’d forward.

Make sure you know who’s raising your eggs!

    Praying for you,

Thanks sisters for all the good tips and suggestions. I am definitely taking it slow in making my final decision, but I liked what I read in the Nourishing Traditions cookbook. Thanks Autumn for directing me there! Very interesting about the egg yolks and bananas…but it sounds simple and easy enough. I definitely realize now it would be better to start on solids then continuing formula.

I didn’t start Alita on solids until she was about a year…but that’s because she just wasn’t interested in eating foods. If Karis is seeming hungry and you can’t quite feed her enough milk to satisfy her, then I would start her on solids. It’s important to start the right things first though. Nurishing traditions has a section on this, they recommend egg yokes to start. They are good brain food. I think banana is a good starter food as well.

I recently started Liam on rice cereal (1/2 cup before bedtime), I had wanted to hold him off for another couple of months, but he, too, was waking up a LOT and nursing full meals during the night. Now he is still waking up here and there but I know it is a training thing because he doesn’t want to eat.

I have a good article that might be helpful- I’ll try to get it to you. I think if I had to supplement, I would rather do solids than formula, as formula isn’t the greatest thing.
